Ridge Trail

  • Trail: .5 mile (1 mile out and back)

  • Degree of difficulty: Easy to Moderate

  • Blaze: Blue

The Ridge Trail is a relatively easy hike that offers a mix of hardwood trees such as oak and hickory on the top of the ridge, and poplar and hemlock trees as you descend into the Notches. The hike can become steep during the last section, but overall it's a manageable hike.

If you plan your visit around the end of May or the beginning of June, you can witness the Mountain Laurels in full bloom, which is an excellent sight to behold. However, if you're looking for a magnificent view of the trail, fall is the best time to visit as the foliage changes into a beautiful array of oranges, reds, and yellows.

You can combine the Ridge Trail with the Laurel Branch Trail and the Geological Trail to form a 1-mile loop. The Visitors Center offers an interpretive guide for this loop hike, which can help you understand the area's geological features, flora, and fauna.

Overall, the Ridge Trail is an excellent choice for hikers looking for a manageable hike with beautiful scenery and a chance to learn about the natural features of the park.
